Chirikayen mountain is at 1650m above sea level and is easy to climb in
three days. You will cross savannah, rainforests and see small gold or
diamond mines. Feel the magical world of flat-top mountains and enjoy
the fantastic views from the top. This is a great trip for beginners to
get the feel for trekking!
go about 90 minutes by Toyota from Santa Elena to the typical Indian
village of Chirikayen. From here we start our 4 and a half hour hike to
the foot of the Chirikayen mountain. “Chirika” means in the Pemon's
language "small parrot" and “yen” means "place". Our overnight stay is
in tents next to a small lagoon.
breakfast it takes 45 minutes to reach the mountain and nearly two
hours to hike to the top at 1650m. Then you cross the mountain which
takes another two hours. . You won't forget this view! The rest of
the afternoon is spent exploring the top of Chirikayen and discovering
unique plants and taking pictures. We have dinner and sleep in tents on
the same place.
breakfast we cross the mountain again and spot orchids or carnivorous
plants. Then we walk a different way back to Santa Elena. We walk
around seven hours, and the other way back to Indian Village of
Chirikayen, take around 4 hours, mostly through the Gran Sabana!
Lunch is served on the way. With some luck you can see anteaters or
deer. One group even saw a jaguar! When you get on the road to the
Village of Chirikayen, the car is waiting with refreshing drinks.
