The Llanos
… are a unique animal paradise on the South American continent!
In the water holes of the flat landscape of the Llanos spectacle caimans are moving from one place to the other as well as different kinds of turtles and capybaras. Giant Anteaters and Tamanduas become more active after the sunset when they are looking for insects. In one place or the other an Anaconda moves smoothly on the street. In the rivers Orinoco dolphins are fishing Piranhas.
The journey takes you to one of the most beautiful streets in Venezuela; Through colonial Andean villages from Merida via the Eagle Pass to the Llanos to Hato El Cedral (classic Llanosfarm). The 56,000-hectare farm is functioning as a Beef farm, but also offers an infrastructure for tourists who can observe wildlife, caimans, capybaras, turtles and iguanas, which live protected on the grounds of the Hato. As part of a safari, you can discover up to 300 bird species along the water holes and in the savannah. The most striking birds are the purple Ibise, the pink spoonbill, the Jaribu storks as well as macaws, parrots, eagles and violets. The Llanos are the best area for bird watching in Venezuela. Ornithologists will find their dreamspots here. Also the largest snake in the world, the Anakonda, can be found here. Our local guides have already been able to pull some specimens out of the water. The longest specimen was up to 7m long. Experience a “piece of Africa” in Venezuela!
